Swift Group Jump 40 places in Sunday Times Fast Track Private Companies

The Swift Group, the country’s largest caravan and motorhome manufacturer has jumped 40 places in the Sunday Times Top Track 250 covering Britain’s biggest mid-market private companies published in the paper on October 11.

Swift, which is the only caravan and motorhome manufacturer to feature in the awards, is ranked 169th in the league table compared to 209th last year. The table covers the company performance to the end of August 2008. Now in its fifth year, the league table ranks Britain’s 250 biggest mid-market private companies, the next tier down from the 100 biggest private companies, by their latest available audited accounts, provided they have increased sales and made an operating profit.

23 companies in the northeast feature in the list and together they employ 40,000 staff and have combined sales of £5.5billion. This is the fourth year that the Swift Group have featured in the league.

Swift was founded in 1965 by the father of the present Chairman, Peter Smith. In the year featured in the scheme the Group turned over £211 million and made a pre tax profit of £3.98 million.

The company manufactures the Swift, Sterling and Sprite ranges of touring caravans, Swift, Bessacarr and Autocruise ranges of motorhomes and Swift range of holiday homes. It operates from plants in Cottingham, Hull and Mexborough covering over 80 acres with 700,000 sq ft of factories. The company is clear market leader in both the touring and motorhome markets and has won numerous design and manufacturing awards for its products.

“We are delighted to have improved our position in the Sunday Times league and, despite the recession, are looking forward to a positive 2010. The return to the great British holiday is having a significant effect on our market and sales for the last few months have been running well ahead of last year. Following a restructuring of the business at the outset of the recession we are well placed to maintain profit.” Chairman Peter Smith commented.
