Britain’s best beaches revealed

Golden sands, big skies and rolling tides. Britain is home to some brilliant beaches – and the motorhome or caravan is one of the best ways of experiencing them.

Make the beach your hotel or guest house with a clifftop caravan park or a motorhome pitch on the promenade. Feel the sea breeze on your face, the sand between your toes. Breathe in the sea air and eat fish and chips wrapped in paper.

But which beach should you next visit?

TripAdvisor has selected the best beaches in the UK, and we have profiled the top 5.

Bournemouth
Where: Dorset, south coast of England
Let’s start with the best. Bournemouth beach came out number 1 in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards. And it’s hard to disagree. Its seven miles of sand have been attracting holidaymakers since Victorian days. Today’s TripAdvisor readers praised the beach for its ‘miles and miles of soft sand’ and ‘lovely clean beaches with lots of benches’. There’s a cool surfing and watersports vibe too.

Luskentyre Beach
Where? Harris, Outer Hebrides, Scotland
Prefer your beaches remote and wild? Luskentyre Beach is the perfect place to blow off the cobwebs. Perched precariously on the edge of Harris, the third largest island in the Outer Hebrides, at Luskentyre you’ll certainly be getting away from the crowds. The beach is pretty special too. ‘One of the most precious beaches of Europe,’ says one TripAdvisor reviewer. No wonder the beach came 2nd in TripAdvisor’s top 10.

Rhossili Bay
Where? Gower Peninsula, South Wales
Beaches don’t come much prettier than Rhossili on the Gower Peninsula. Gower is famed for its beauty, and Rhossili is the jewel in Gower’s crown. With 3 miles of shimmering white sand, there’s no wonder it’s been described as the ‘supermodel of British beaches’ by The Independent. The beach is loved by walkers and windsurfers – The Times even named it the UK’s No1 dog-friendly beach.

Brighton
Where? East Sussex, England
Mods and rockers made Brighton famous, but its beach is equally attention-grabbing. Too cool for run-of-the-mill sand, Brighton is a pebble beach. Pull up a deckchair and watch the sun set over the Palace Pier and Royal Pavilion, or hire a kayak or paddleboard. ‘The buzz, sights, culture, cafes, shops and sights are just SO fab,’ wrote one TripAdvisor reviewer.

Weymouth
Where? Dorset, South West England
Three miles of golden beach dappled with sunshine await at Weymouth. The best known beach on the historic Jurassic Coast, it also offers amazing views along the coastline from the top of the Jurassic Tower. ‘Great sandy beach… perfect for sandcastle building,’ wrote one TripAdvisor reviewer.  ‘Weymouth to me is the best beach in England,’ wrote another. The Georgian promenade is perfect for a stroll after fish and chips.
