Life’s a beach in Newquay
This iconic Cornish seaside town is a touring delight.
THIS TRADITIONAL seaside town is a magnet to ‘surfy dudes’, but has plenty for ordinary folks, too.
For starters, the beaches around the town are exceptional. Head there out of season and they won’t be too busy but, in summer, they’ll be packed. That said, you have a dozen to choose from…and they’re all different: coves, wide sandy beaches, rock pools, etc.
Fistral scores highly on all aspects of beach life, but if you fancy somewhere quieter, head to Lusty Glaze Beach on the northern edge of town. This horseshoe beach has beach huts for hire and, during the summer, hosts Sundowner live music sessions in the evenings. Whipsiderry, Crantock, Fistral and Towan beaches are all dog-friendly.
In late June, Newquay has its own Carnival Week, which is packed with events and activities, including duck racing, live music, a classic car show and a mascot race.
If you need a break from the beach, or it’s raining, head to Newquay’s Aquarium where you’ll get a close-up view of exotic fish, turtles and sharks in 40 naturally-themed habitats. A fascinating way to fill a few hours.
A short walk into town from there, and you’ll reach Trenance Leisure Park and Gardens, a large grass and woodland area filled with play parks, crazy golf, a miniature railway and much more. Newquay Zoo is here, too, and, on the west side of the park, you’ll find lovely, established gardens featuring colourful flora against a backdrop of majestic trees. There’s also a boating lake here, which is home to a wide variety of wildlife and a place where you can hire a range of craft. At the day’s end, head back to the beach (Fistral is westfacing) for a relaxing drink, and to watch the sun set over sea.
